minute opening to Italy. Lots of MS about this morning and evening,

The unid on 47.46Mhz is a new one, poorly modulated so typically private
Italian. Even though TLA M. Faito was very strong earlier in the
afternoon there was no sign of a signal from Luna on its old slot.

From about 2100UTC a duct formed over the continent to the SE and the
German E2 TX at Gottelborner Hohe increased in strength from its normal
S1 reaching up to S6 and reasonable video. At the same time Bantiger
which is normally only rx'd via ionoscatter and MS came up to S2. On E4
I started to hear audio from La Dole SUI at 700km and syncs were seen on
the TV. All three signals were still going strong when I switched off at
2130 but had dropped to normal at 0500 this morning. The duct was narrow
enough that the Liege TX on E3 was unaffected. --- 7/5/07
Patchy Es today, a small opening to the east during the morning and brief weak vids from TVE on E2 around 1800 local. Also copied very
weak was the 6m amateur beacon on St Helena, probably some TEP helping
that one, no E2 Af video was seen on the trace. --- 8/5/07

Between 1700-1730 a number of carriers were logged on R4 and two on R5.
The new unid station on E2- reappeared but not sufficiently strong
enough to see, it's reception coincided with other Monte Faito signals. 1801 a carrier was logged on E2, almost certainly from Syria.
Unid carriers
Both had slow fading unlike typical 1x or 2x Es and were from a similar
southerly direction, the first appeared from an otherwise dead band and
remained the only signal until Germany faded up, to suddenly have very
short skip or intense Es forming with nothing else being received is
unusual in itself.

The E4 4P carrier is one I've logged before, only during intense Es and
when Tunisia has been visible.
The E2 carrier isn't one I've logged previously, it faded up during
intense Es from Italy and also just prior to B2 opening to Athens, Greece.
The new E2- signal is in addition to the one logged last week, both were
audible today. Programming this afternoon was a basketball game. This is audio of an ad break

including the logo's, the one in the TRC has what appears to be Rete
Italia under it.
The signal matched those from TLA and RAI on IB so it's almost certainly on or near Monte Faito. The other previously logged carrier was also
heard for much of the same time but at lower strengths but I doubt they
could be co-sited only 1.2Mhz apart.
Not sure if the first feeder is Radio Jovica as I've not got any RDS
info for that, the PI is listed as Radio 19. --- An update from Roberto Scaglione from http://www.fmdx.it confirms the station received;

Another very frustrating opening into Africa on B1 today, some stills
and some video were captured but nothing strong enough to ID the station
on 48.249.75
The African video continues to frustrate me, the signal hovered around
syncs level for nearly four hours today making brief surges into video.
The best still image I captured was this OM face to camera, I've also
got some video of three figures dancing but will have to transfer the
.mov to something more useable before uploading it.

At 1632 for two minutes the distinctive signal from E Guinea also
appeared just above 48.250.
DK1MAX in JN58 was reporting 48249,854 Cameroon at S9 and also had audio
from it! This didn't show at all here and I'm pretty sure Max is using
calibrated equipment so this means the 249.75 isn't Douala. What
surprises me is after hours of prop into Africa, possibly via a mix of
aTEP and Es there has been no significant opening to Spain or Portugal.
During this time ST2A in Sudan was heard across much of EU on 6m. E2

Another major opening to the south today with high MUFs and more African
signals reported.
About 1210UTC both RTP1 and RTP2 were on E2 causing severe CCI.
Yet more signals from Africa this afternoon with similar strengths to
yesterday. The Equatorial Guinea transmitter was also heard later in the
afternoon for brief periods, it has drift further up the band from the
last time it was logged but is just as poorly modulated. Both the Sao
Tome and Namibia beacons were heard across EU on 50Mhz this afternoon,
the Sao Tome beacon peaked S3 here. Best image I could manage today is

Not so many strong signals today although the mystery African appeared again at 1836z along with a new previously unlogged signal on a 2P offset, at the same Mauritania was on 6m SSB. The jury is still out why we are noticing all these 'new' carriers to the south this season when regular checks last summer showed nothing apart from Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea.
About 1630z there appeared to be 2x Es to the east with many unid R1 and R2 carriers appearing.
While TLA was strong on IA I checked the two channels below E2 but couldn't hear Telelibera at all, the other mystery higher up was a reasonable strength but not good enough for video. --- 17/5/07

1630 E3 TVE as above Portugal was received at the same time as Spain today but apart from severe CCI nothing could be resolved. Once again the mystery Af video appeared on the waterfall display at approximately 1330z, this time slow drift up was noted, possibly indicating a recent switch on. The MUF reached at least 108Mhz to Spain around 1630z, I hope all these southerly openings aren't going to be the trend for the season.

An excellent opening across the North Atlantic today, carriers noted upto A4 but rather than log them I was waiting patiently with the camera on A2, the return path had been open for a while on E2 but this is very common, receiving video from the US isn't! A2 opened from nothing to video within seconds, I've added some more info and some pics here http://www.ukdx.org.uk/tv/na_unid.htm
Also noted today were carriers from Iran on E2 at 1650 and another unid E2 carrier with 50Hz sidebands on 0 offset beaming about 100° from me, it reached S6 but with IA almost end stop there was no chance of audio clues. 1745 and a new to me carrier was seen on waterfall on ch IC 0 offset.

The first Scandinavian opening for me this year, lots of Norway but no Sweden seen in video.
Tunisia reached very high signal strengths this evening with colour and audio. A game show was on at 1900z and was viewable until it faded at 1933!

At 1330 two carriers were spotted with a beam heading about 270° on A2
8P with 60Hz sidebands, signal reached S5 IE borderline video but
neither were strong enough to resolve, the event faded after twenty

a few seconds.

Also spotted today were Syria, Iran and a familiar UNID on E2, this one
always appears just below 48.250 when the Middle East is in, all signals
hovered just below video level to me.
For much of yesterday Italy was visible on B1 with the morning opening
quite intense and a weak signal was heard from RTSH Albania on IC for
the first time this season. I noticed a signal on E4 8P that I dont
think is Pelister Macedonia, images were quite weak but I've posted a
couple of grabs, does anyone recognise or can best guess the logo?

unfortunately no audio was heard. The signal was also heard yesterday
evening when HRT Croatia was in and Italy had faded.
TV7 continues to be a like a semi local this season appearing as soon as
the band opens to Italy, I think this must be due to it being my optimal
1x Es distance and the perfect take off in that direction.
When I switched off at 2300 local both Syria and Iran had faded back in
on E2!

Throughout the evening opening the Italian channels were full of CCI but
all the usual suspects were being received. The RAI on 0 offset IA was
not one of the regulars I see, I can only find two TXs over 1kW listed.
A very intense Es opening to SE Europe during the evening including a
massive signal from HRT Croatia for over 30 minutes.
The programme on TV7 Serbia is I think Dnevnik2 which means diary or
journal, is this the news and why 2?
During the peak and with 144Mhz Es being reported at the same time
across more southern Europe a carrier was spotted on 48.250.0 peaking to
the SW I suspect this to be Bantiger but via backscatter.

Quite a day for Es, obviously the highlight is the BIII even though it
remains unid, this is the first time in twenty five years I've seen it
and without modern aids like the early warning system and carrier
detection I'd more than likely missed it. Equipment used for Band III is
the same D100 with a Triax 13 element yagi and low noise mast head amp.
The log doesn't show the fact that for most of the day both Spain and
Italy were being received on Band 1, often both at the same time with
most channels being a mess of CCI. The unid arab on E3 aired news in
English after 1900z and this now appears to be Jordan, their schedule
shows English News at 2200 local. The presenter can be heard quite
clearly talking about 'His Majesty the King', the only other Middle East
country to have a King is Saudi and Saudi 2 doesn't air on Band 1.

Other highlights for the day were a number of Caribbean offsets on A2, 3
and 4 none of which made it to video this time. TLA and RAI Uno were
both logged from Monte Faito but nothing was seen of TeleLibera, the
weaker unid on 47.46 was heard though. At 1615 a rough sounding carrier
was heard below IC, it had a similar waterfall appearance to TLc that

Jordanian TV was visually confirmed this morning after initially logging
it the previous evening with the news in English (confirmed with their
website schedule). Audio this time was in Arabic but there was no trace
of single hop signals from Italy so a clear image was seen of the logo
and scrolling arabic text along the bottom.
TLA is the unid signal on 47Mhz, for the passed few days I'm sure
TeleLibera has been off air as all the other Monte Faito signals have
been endstop so this meant the much weaker signal from TLA was in the
clear. Although quite weak I was able to get a parallel check from TLA
on IA to confirm it, monitoring the signal from IA while watching E2-
showed each signal fading independently and the IA transmitter appears
to be quite clean on a waterfall display but the 46Mhz signal is very
wide and distorted so I'm pretty sure it's not a spur.
TLc on 81Mhz was the other mystery I logged last week, I've seen it
before but not on this offset frequency or this strong.
During the early evening numerous signals were noted across all three
channels that are unid. E4 had four that I cannot place at all, both
were from the south while the MUF was up around 120Mhz towards ALG and
MRC. I've still not confirmed if the Laayoune TX is still on air, maybe
one of these mysteries was it?

including the logo's, the one in the TRC has what appears to be Rete
Italia under it.
The signal matched those from TLA and RAI on IB so it's almost certainly on or near Monte Faito. The other previously logged carrier was also
heard for much of the same time but at lower strengths but I doubt they
could be co-sited only 1.2Mhz apart.
Not sure if the first feeder is Radio Jovica as I've not got any RDS
info for that, the PI is listed as Radio 19. --- An update from Roberto Scaglione from http://www.fmdx.it confirms the station received;

Another very frustrating opening into Africa on B1 today, some stills
and some video were captured but nothing strong enough to ID the station
on 48.249.75
The African video continues to frustrate me, the signal hovered around
syncs level for nearly four hours today making brief surges into video.
The best still image I captured was this OM face to camera, I've also
got some video of three figures dancing but will have to transfer the
.mov to something more useable before uploading it.

At 1632 for two minutes the distinctive signal from E Guinea also
appeared just above 48.250.
DK1MAX in JN58 was reporting 48249,854 Cameroon at S9 and also had audio
from it! This didn't show at all here and I'm pretty sure Max is using
calibrated equipment so this means the 249.75 isn't Douala. What
surprises me is after hours of prop into Africa, possibly via a mix of
aTEP and Es there has been no significant opening to Spain or Portugal.
During this time ST2A in Sudan was heard across much of EU on 6m. E2

Another major opening to the south today with high MUFs and more African
signals reported.
About 1210UTC both RTP1 and RTP2 were on E2 causing severe CCI.
Yet more signals from Africa this afternoon with similar strengths to
yesterday. The Equatorial Guinea transmitter was also heard later in the
afternoon for brief periods, it has drift further up the band from the
last time it was logged but is just as poorly modulated. Both the Sao
Tome and Namibia beacons were heard across EU on 50Mhz this afternoon,
the Sao Tome beacon peaked S3 here. Best image I could manage today is

Not so many strong signals today although the mystery African appeared again at 1836z along with a new previously unlogged signal on a 2P offset, at the same Mauritania was on 6m SSB. The jury is still out why we are noticing all these 'new' carriers to the south this season when regular checks last summer showed nothing apart from Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea.
About 1630z there appeared to be 2x Es to the east with many unid R1 and R2 carriers appearing.
While TLA was strong on IA I checked the two channels below E2 but couldn't hear Telelibera at all, the other mystery higher up was a reasonable strength but not good enough for video. --- 17/5/07

Once again the mystery Af video appeared on the waterfall display at approximately 1330z, this time slow drift up was noted, possibly indicating a recent switch on. The MUF reached at least 108Mhz to Spain around 1630z, I hope all these southerly openings aren't going to be the trend for the season.

An excellent opening across the North Atlantic today, carriers noted upto A4 but rather than log them I was waiting patiently with the camera on A2, the return path had been open for a while on E2 but this is very common, receiving video from the US isn't! Also noted today were carriers from Iran on E2 at 1650 and another unid E2 carrier with 50Hz sidebands on 0 offset beaming about 100° from me, it reached S6 but with IA almost end stop there was no chance of audio clues. 1745 and a new to me carrier was seen on waterfall on ch IC 0 offset.

The first Scandinavian opening for me this year, lots of Norway but no Sweden seen in video.
Tunisia reached very high signal strengths this evening with colour and audio. A game show was on at 1900z and was viewable until it faded at 1933!

At 1330 two carriers were spotted with a beam heading about 270° on A2
8P with 60Hz sidebands, signal reached S5 IE borderline video but
neither were strong enough to resolve, the event faded after twenty

Also spotted today were Syria, Iran and a familiar UNID on E2, this one
always appears just below 48.250 when the Middle East is in, all signals
hovered just below video level to me.
For much of yesterday Italy was visible on B1 with the morning opening
quite intense and a weak signal was heard from RTSH Albania on IC for
the first time this season. I noticed a signal on E4 8P that I dont
think is Pelister Macedonia, images were quite weak but I've posted a
couple of grabs, does anyone recognise or can best guess the logo?

evening when HRT Croatia was in and Italy had faded.
TV7 continues to be a like a semi local this season appearing as soon as
the band opens to Italy, I think this must be due to it being my optimal
1x Es distance and the perfect take off in that direction.
When I switched off at 2300 local both Syria and Iran had faded back in
on E2!

Throughout the evening opening the Italian channels were full of CCI but
all the usual suspects were being received. The RAI on 0 offset IA was
not one of the regulars I see, I can only find two TXs over 1kW listed.
A very intense Es opening to SE Europe during the evening including a
massive signal from HRT Croatia for over 30 minutes.
The programme on TV7 Serbia is I think Dnevnik2 which means diary or
journal, is this the news and why 2?
During the peak and with 144Mhz Es being reported at the same time
across more southern Europe a carrier was spotted on 48.250.0 peaking to
the SW I suspect this to be Bantiger but via backscatter.

Quite a day for Es, obviously the highlight is the BIII even though it
remains unid, this is the first time in twenty five years I've seen it
and without modern aids like the early warning system and carrier
detection I'd more than likely missed it. Equipment used for Band III is
the same D100 with a Triax 13 element yagi and low noise mast head amp.
The log doesn't show the fact that for most of the day both Spain and
Italy were being received on Band 1, often both at the same time with
most channels being a mess of CCI. The unid arab on E3 aired news in
English after 1900z and this now appears to be Jordan, their schedule
shows English News at 2200 local. The presenter can be heard quite
clearly talking about 'His Majesty the King', the only other Middle East
country to have a King is Saudi and Saudi 2 doesn't air on Band 1.

Other highlights for the day were a number of Caribbean offsets on A2, 3
and 4 none of which made it to video this time. TLA and RAI Uno were
both logged from Monte Faito but nothing was seen of TeleLibera, the
weaker unid on 47.46 was heard though. At 1615 a rough sounding carrier
was heard below IC, it had a similar waterfall appearance to TLc that

Jordanian TV was visually confirmed this morning after initially logging
it the previous evening with the news in English (confirmed with their
website schedule). Audio this time was in Arabic but there was no trace
of single hop signals from Italy so a clear image was seen of the logo
and scrolling arabic text along the bottom.
TLA is the unid signal on 47Mhz, for the passed few days I'm sure
TeleLibera has been off air as all the other Monte Faito signals have
been endstop so this meant the much weaker signal from TLA was in the
clear. Although quite weak I was able to get a parallel check from TLA
on IA to confirm it, monitoring the signal from IA while watching E2-
showed each signal fading independently and the IA transmitter appears
to be quite clean on a waterfall display but the 46Mhz signal is very
wide and distorted so I'm pretty sure it's not a spur.
TLc on 81Mhz was the other mystery I logged last week, I've seen it
before but not on this offset frequency or this strong.
During the early evening numerous signals were noted across all three
channels that are unid. E4 had four that I cannot place at all, both
were from the south while the MUF was up around 120Mhz towards ALG and
MRC. I've still not confirmed if the Laayoune TX is still on air, maybe
one of these mysteries was it?
